University at Buffalo General Education

Thom Hanford developed the University at Buffalo General Education online site, directory and resource database when serving as a Graduate Assistant for the Associate Dean of General Education at the University at Buffalo. The site at last survey (June 2010) remains virtually unchanged. Site development included HTML, PHP, MySQL and Access database interfacing. Tools For Teaching CD / DVD

Tools for Teaching was a program developed to provide guidelines and teaching tips, and tools for General Education course instructors, graduate assistants, and teaching assistants. Developed initially on paper and online, we moved the program to CD-ROM in 2001, and eventually to DVD. UBCATS Development

As a graduate assistant, I served with the Associate Dean and Program Coordinator for General Education to implement Academic Management System's (then new) Course Eval system for collecting, analyzing and reporting student evaluations of courses in the College of Arts and Sciences. This process replaced an aging paper process completed via Scan-Tron.

Harpur Advising Website

I developed the original nationally-recognized Harpur College Academic Advising site which featured media-rich interactive tools, walkthroughs, videos, surveys, planning features and communication tools. The site sought to marry self-service information with one-on-one support -- was presented at NACADA. The site, while on a new platform, still retains most of the interactive tools and features. These include the "Ask an Adviser" functions, 'self-aware' FAQ's and more. PreHealth Credentialing

I created the Pre-Health Credentialing System used by the Pre-Health program at Binghamton University. Developed using PHP and MySQL principally, the tool provides an easy-to-use and access system for submitting, updating and reviewing pre-health program credentialing materials. Administrators can easily and quickly update materials received by the student or on the student's behalf, instantly making the information and status available to the student. This is a critical tool that helps the program manage workloads and provide effective, real-time service to pre-health students and medical program applicants. Banner Project Communications

As a Senior Staff Assistant (Student Systems Specialist) in the Provost's Office, attached to the Banner Project, I was responsible for the marketing, website and public communications discussing the Banner Project. This was in addition to my duties related to the implementation of the new student information system. The various sites required the development of instructional videos, streaming video and audio, interactive pages tied to various databases, and other means to communicating with the campus community, including social networking. Transfer Articulation Catalog Development

I developed the Transfer Articulation application in use on the Binghamton University website. The TA application is a critical tool for prospective students, as well as current students seeking to transfer credit back to the University. The tool was developed by interfacing the transfer catalogs within Banner to a PHP / MySQL application that permits the ready searching and matching of courses. BU Brain Portal Development

While on the Banner Project, I was the lead associate on the portal project. Our portal suite was interfaced to offer direct access to online tools for students, faculty and staff. My development work included developing the portal and SSB style-sheets (site look and feel), developing the complete cadre of initially available portal channels, and developing the local sites that directed users to the portal, and available help/learning materials. Campus Mapping and Virtual Tours

As part of the portal / student information system project, I worked with a team to develop virtual tours, image displays, street level mapping, and top-looking mapping applications for the campus using a series of mapping tools and API's, principally, the Google API. Exam Schedule

The Binghamton University final exam application pulls data from a Resource 25 interface and publishes to a PHP application. Training, Documentation & Captivate Training

As part of the Banner project, I developed dozens of documents, workflows and business process documents. In addition, I developed over 60 Adobe Captivate instructional videos and walkthroughs that could be explored and viewed at a student, faculty or staff members own pace. Adobe Captivate permitted software simulations, complete screen captures and 100% capture of all screen movements. Flex Based Schedule Development Tools

As part of our initial attempts to create a usable course building application which interfaced to self service, I developed XML-fed Adobe Flex rich internet applications (RIA) permitting the easy selection, exploration and consideration of courses. Student could select or explore courses based on any and all criteria available in the system. Students could drag-and-drop courses into a schedule that they could print or save. Channel/Portlet Development

I developed a cadre of 'channels' for the initial roll-out of the campus web portal (totaling roughly 70). The channels were developed via portlets, using existing RSS feeds (or newly created feeds), various developer APIs, PHP, XML and static HTML. Security Maintenance

bHELPful Customer Support

In order to manage the various tasks, procedures, products and teams I support; I developed a specialized ticket collection, tracking and notification tool. The tool is called bHELPful, and features immediate email updates, online status checkers, and fast and scalable MySQL database backend. Registrar's Site
